Chapter Twenty-Six
They did have to stop for gas eventually. Though the truck had a large gas tank, it was not a low-consumption vehicle. Damon had been driving back and forth between Regâs place and the Papillon estate before even leaving town, and he hadnât bothered to top up the gas before leaving.
âMay as well drive until we canât anymore,â Damon said philosophically, as Reg anxiously watched the fuel indicator dip down into the red zone. So it wasnât until Corvin called again to say that they wanted to stop for refueling that they pulled into a service station for gas, snacks, and a much-needed bathroom break. Reg managed to get out of the car without letting Nico out, but she looked around inside the service station convenience store for a leash to ensure he couldnât escape when they decided to take the cats outside to relieve themselves.
There were no leashes, which was not a big surprise. Apparently, people who took their pets on road trips with them usually planned ahead and had leashes from home. Reg found some string she hoped would do the job. She needed to be able to fashion some kind of leash or harness out of it that would hold Nico, but not choke him. And probably one for Starlight too, but she was far more confident of him not running off. Still, Starlight might decide he didnât like road travel and try to go back to the cottage on his own.
She went to the front counter with her string and put it down among a growing pile of snack foods. Reg looked at the pile, her brows drawing down.
âWe only have five people. This looks like weâre feeding a whole Girl Guide camp.â
Corvin looked over the food and shrugged. âLooks about right. Especially when one of those people is a pixie. Have you seen the amount they eat?â
Reg thought of the waif-like faces of the pixies and wasnât sure she believed it. They always looked half-starving. She suspected that Corvin was just covering for how much he was planning to eat.
âHave you ever been to a Girl Guide camp?â Corvin asked, inching closer to her and looking her over as if trying to imagine her in one of the ugly brown uniforms.
âYou might be surprised.â
He snickered. She could feel the heat radiating off of him and the musky scent that she associated with him when he wasnât giving off the scent of roses. She closed her eyes, pretending that she couldnât smell it and wasnât imagining herself in his arms once again. There was no way that he could ever know how much she enjoyed his physical proximity. He already used his charms on her too often, determined to get the advantage over her and to talk her into relinquishing her powers to him.
âI can imagine little Reg Rawlins as a Girl Scout,â Corvin said. âBut somehow, I donât think you were the same rule follower as Davyn. I think you were probably the one
